Benefits of plant biotechnology

Since the first commercial plantings of biotech crops in 1996, farmers in developed and developing countries have enjoyed the benefits of plant biotechnology.  The unmatched rate of adoption of biotech crops by farmers around the world demonstrates the safety and benefits of this technology. Farmers choose biotech seeds for a wide variety of reasons, from increased yield and stability in crop production, to improved food quality from crops that are resistant to pests and viruses, to reduced labour requirements.

Society in general also receives benefits from plant biotechnology through increased yields that keep food abundant and affordable, improved incomes which benefit rural economies, and the preservation of the environment. Through higher yields, biotech crops help preserve wildlife habitats and biodiversity, and by facilitating conservation tillage, biotechnology helps reduce soil erosion, loss of soil moisture and greenhouse gas emissions.

CropLife International works with industry and other groups around the world to make sure that policymakers, farmers and consumers are well informed about the benefits of this important technology. We are committed to making available the best technologies to help achieve sufficient, safe and healthy food production, improved livelihoods and the preservation of non-renewable resources.

Database of the Safety and Benefits of Biotechnology

This database contains over 400 peer-reviewed scientific papers and reviews demonstrating the benefits and safety implications associated with the use of agricultural biotechnology products.  Papers can be searched by crop, geographical region, and benefit type (i.e., socio-economic benefit, environmental benefit, etc.).
